All levels of government, the private sector, non-profits and the public need to be on the same page. The U.S. private sector is a critical part of the team.”
.
This September, organizations and citizens from across the nation will come together for our seventh annual National Preparedness Month event, designed to encourage Americans to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities. We’re asking your organization to consider joining the National Preparedness Month (NPM) Coalition and to send a message to your customers, employees, members and all your stakeholders about the importance of being prepared for emergencies, whether that emergency be three days without electricity, or a major disaster striking your community and damaging your home or workplace. Last year, 2,700 organizations took part in the Coalition. You can register today by visiting http://ready.adcouncil.org .
.
As another example of public and private sector working together, on July 1st, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosted a meeting between U.S. business leaders and senior DHS and FEMA officials on the topic of national preparedness, to inform the federal Preparedness Task Force. The task force was formed at the direction of Congress this year to make recommendations on evaluating and changing the nation’s emergency preparedness policies, grants and capabilities. We encourage you to help shape the results of that effort by submitting substantive written recommendations to http://www.fema.gov/preparednesstaskforce/get_involved.shtm.
.
We hope you will work with us on any or all of these efforts, because our nation’s citizens are better served, and the survivors of disasters in our communities are better able to recover and restore their lives, when public sector and private sector representatives are literally and substantively teamed in our efforts.
.
Daniel Stoneking, Director
FEMA External Affairs Private Sector Division
FEMA-Private-Sector@fema.gov
.

"

messages+=" Evacuation Shelters
Reunion Arena recently closed its doors and may soon be demolished. Therefore, it may not be available to us in the event of a significant disaster like Hurricane Katrina - when it was used as a shelter for large numbers of evacuees. The City’s current sheltering plan also relies on the Dallas Convention Center as a “mega-shelter” that could house up to 5,000 people. However, that is dependent on space availability if a large conference is going on during the time it is needed as a shelter. For example, one of the largest annual events, the Mary Kay convention, is running from July 16 – August 2 this year and they use virtually the entire facility for that convention. Realizing that we may still need shelters similar to Reunion for future large-scale disasters, we are asking for assistance from those of you in the private sector that may be aware of facilities that could be utilized as large shelters if needed. We have many smaller facilities (primarily park facilities) that we use on a daily basis to deal with smaller events, but the reason that we are interested in locating larger facilities is that it is much easier from a logistics standpoint to support fewer but larger facilities as opposed to multiple smaller venues.
-
We are looking for facilities that could be used without causing major impacts to existing operations; we don’t want to interrupt your daily business. Warehouse spaces, large meeting venues, etc., that have basic utilities such as water, power, HVAC, etc., is what we need.
-
We will be happy to work with any of you that have ideas about how best to approach this, and look forward to hearing from you. You can contact us by email at OEM@dallascityhall.com or at 214-670-4275. Thanks in advance for your assistance with this important project.

"
